Wax Myrtle Myrica cerifera

This aromatic, small tree or shrub has a slender multi-trunk and branches that form a round crown. It can grow from 20 to 40 feet tall with a trunk of up to 8 inches in diameter. This plant can be planted as an ornamental tree or in small groups as a screen or a shrub border. It does well in full sun or partial shade. It is drought tolerant and fast growing. Shiny, light green leaves and small blue berries (on female plants) make it an outstanding choice for landscaping.

Dwarf Wax Myrtle Myrica pusilla

This is a small shrub that grows in colonies. It comes from the bayberry family, and can grow from 5 to 6 feet in height and width, and has a spreading growth pattern. It also has ornamental value. Its evergreen habit and aromatic leaves make it an interesting landscape plant. It is useful for erosion control, makes an excellent pruned hedge, or can be trained to have a ‘tree’ shape.

Yaupon Holly Ilex vomitoria

This small tree has little dark green leaves that it keeps all year. In the spring it has tiny white and yellow flowers. The male plants make flowers, but no berries. The female plants have lots of bright red berries. It grows from 15 to 25 feet high and 10 to 15 feet wide, and is very drought tolerant. It has a fast growth rate and small leaves, making it a perfect choice for topiary.

Dwarf  Yaupon Holly Ilex vomitoria nana

This plant usually grows as a shrub but occasionally may be found as a tree. Its foliage consists of dark green evergreen oval to egg-shaped leaves. Female varieties of this holly have red berries in the fall. It has a height from 4 to 7 feet and a width from 6 to 10 feet. It can be used as a bonsai, for mass planting, or for a patio container or above ground planter. It makes a superior hedge and can be trained to grow in any direction and on trellises.
