Texas Red Oak

A sturdy tree that tolerates drought and a wide range of conditions. Rounded shape with a height of 60 to 100 feet and width of 40 to 50 feet. Fast growth rate, up to 2 feet per year. Excellent fall foliage with yellow to red color makes it an attractive choice. Broad leaves produce good shade.

Redbud Cercis Canadensis

This is an excellent ornamental tree. The magenta flowers of the eastern redbud appear all over the tree in early spring. The flowers are even produced on trunks. Redbud has a yellow fall color and is shade and drought tolerant. It has a height around 30 feet and width around 25 feet. It has rapid growth when young, and is steady when mature.

Shumard Oak Quercus shumardii

This is an upright tree that is fast-growing, with an open canopy and solid spreading branches. The leaves are dark green and turn dark red in the fall. The height can get up to 120 feet and the width is from 50 to 60 feet. This tree can withstand high heat and is adaptable to various soil conditions. It is one of the larger oak trees available.

Texas Ash Fraxinus texensis

A wonderful shade tree with a spreading crown. Foliage of olive to dark green and lighter beneath. Intense fall color displays leaves turning red, gold, orange, burgundy, and purple colors. It is the most drought and heat tolerant ash. Adaptable to a wide variety of soil. Height of 30 to 50 feet and width of 25 to 40 feet. It makes an attractive and versatile landscape tree.

Texas Sage Leucophyllum frutescens

From the Purple Sage family, it is a good choice for a container pot, foundation plantings, hedges, barriers, windbreaks, or screens. Although the leaves have a velvety feeling, it is still considered to be one of the strongest shrubs around. It can withstand an array of conditions and will still remain beautiful. It is very drought resistant, which makes it a good choice for a corner of the yard not easily reached by watering systems. It is tolerant of poor soils and has no pest problems. This aromatic plant has small gray-green leaves and light lavender blossoms during the summer. It grows to a height from 4 to 8 feet and a width from 4 to 6 feet.

Texas Sycamore Platanus occidentalis

This tree is easy to identify, having broad, maple-like leaves and a distinctive white, exfoliating bark on trunk and limbs. It has a height from 60 to 100 feet and width from 40 to 60 feet. It is widely planted as a shade tree and is very adaptable and rugged. It is fast growing, with a massive trunk and a wide-spreading crown. It has light green leaves that turn golden in the fall. These wide leaves make a pleasant rustling sound in the breeze.
