Trees- Page 2

Cedar Elm Ulmus crassifolia

A moderately fast growing tree, each one having its own unique character. Has a height from 30 to 90 feet and width of 40 to 60 feet. It is a tough, adaptable tree with excellent drought tolerance and beautiful golden yellow fall color. It has small, sandpaper-like leaves and is often planted as an ornamental shade tree.

Chinese Elm Ulmus parvifolia

This tough durable tree is resistant to pests, disease and air pollution. With a moderate to fast growth rate, it grows into a large shade tree from 35 to 50 feet high and 25 to 50 feet wide. It has dark green, shiny leaves that turn yellow in the fall. The bark is beautiful and exfoliating. This is a handsome tree, often with a trunk that forks and produces a vase shape.

Chinese Pistache Pistacia chinensis

This long-lived, winter hardy shade tree has spectacular red to red-orange fall color. It tolerates high heat and drought and is extremely pest resistant. It is a grand shade tree having fast then moderate growth rate that can tolerate a wide variety of soil conditions. The height is from 25 to 40 feet and width from 25 to 35 feet. The female trees make fruit consisting of clusters of small, round green berries which turn red to reddish-purple in the fall. These fruit clusters make great table decorations. This tree definitely makes an excellent ornamental yard tree.

Chinquapin Oak Quercus muehlenbergii

Chinquapin Oak is an attractive medium to large shade tree. Its distinctive saw-tooth leaves are a rich green, turning yellow to bronze in fall. It is adaptable to a range of soils and exposures. Seldom troubled by diseases or pests, it is moderate to fast-growing and develops an open rounded crown as it ages. The heat tolerance is very high and does well in medium-low moisture areas. The height is from 50 to 90 feet and the width from 20 to 40 feet. The trunk diameter is from 1 to 3 feet.

Crapemyrtle Lagerstroemia indica x Lagerstroemia faurei

Crapemyrtles are extremely useful summer flowering plants with varieties ranging in size from 5 to 25 feet. The average height is 15 to 30 feet and the average width is 6 to 15 feet with a rapid growth rate. There are even some miniatures growing from 18 to 24 inches. Best planted in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Holds up under heat and humidity and will tolerate drought once established. Because of the variability in size and character, crapemrytles have many uses such as near an ornamental patio, garden tree/bush, for screening or hedging, and in the shrub border. Color varieties include light pink, coral pink, light lavender, white, dark pink to red, light magenta, dark red, dark purple, wine red, cherry red, medium lavender, bi-colored lavender, medium pink, purple, fuchsia, pink-lavender, rose, dark lavender, & dark red.

Desert Willow Chilopsis linearis

This is a nice flowering tree with unique trumpet-shaped white, pink or purple flowers. It provides a light canopy of willow-like foliage with abundant flowers scattered throughout the tree. This tree has a long flowering period. The height is from 15 to 25 feet and the width is around 10 feet. Although tolerant of very dry conditions it will produce more flowers and leaves with increased watering. It is a medium sized tree, excellent for use around patios and walkways were the flowers can be enjoyed, and well suited for a wide screen or tall hedging.
